Hejsan!

Re: Jenolin

Hi Bengt-Göran - I was reading through the forum and found your post. There was a photo I found online, I can't remember where, but if I remember correctly the picture was with a written story involving the Stenman family in Storön and their history of sealing.

This is the photo: The second man from the left is Seth Stenman, and the fifth man was Sten Stenman

the lighthouse in the back of the photo looks similar to the one in your photo. Would this be the same place as your photo?

Regards,
    Dani

Hi Dani!
Yes the photo seems to bee from the same place, the island Malören.
Probably taken before 1927. But, can Sten been home visiting his brothers later? He looks like a litte bit "dressed up". In USA he was an engraver and a die maker.
This year,1927,  Sten Agard Stenman, born 1904, emigrated to Usa. He died in California 1965, named as Stan A, Stenman.
Seth was one year older and a fisherman. The fourth man can bee Axel Gerhard Stenman, one year younger than Sten.

Was the photo in Swedish or American newspapers? Date?

Regards
Bengt-Göran

Re: Jenolin

Thank you Bengt-Göran!

The photo, among others, came from this website: http://www.storon.se/saljakt.asp
As I am not familiar with the fishing and sealing heritage of my Stenman family, I enjoyed reading this website very much! And the story about Set out on the ice in the storm was very fascinating. It was an interesting glimpse into what life was like for them. Have you seen this website before? I didn't notice a year for the photograph. It's very possible it was taken on one of Sten's travels home. I can try to look through some ship manifests to see how many times he had traveled home. (I only have access to American ones. I have yet to learn how to access Swedish databases. Little by little I learn!  )

If Sten emigrated in 1927, I may have a photo of him if he stopped in Chicago after he arrived in the U.S. I have a photo of some unidentified Swedes at just about the same time he came to the United States. Comparing the two photos, it looks possible that one of them may be Sten, in front of my family's first home they built in Chicago. Everyone is dressed up, so it was for some special occasion. The trouble is, I have never seen a photo of Sten without a hat on. The man in my photo has a very distinct hairline.  Do you have Stenman relatives also? I wonder if someone else would be able to make in identification. Just in case, I'll include that picture in my reply. (I had to zoom in very close and put the two photos side by side to compare.) The man I believe resembles Sten is the man on the far right. My great grandmother Esther E. Stenman is the one on the far left. She and Sten were cousins. Everyone else I am positive are Swedish, but can not Identify them. Maybe someday. :)

I appreciate the information about Sten living in California. The only Stenman I had traced to California was Axel Emanuel Stenman, who was Sten's Uncle. I will look into that further. Thank you!

Also, in the article I found the original photo in, it also mentions a boat developed by N.O. Stenman. I have a few questions about that. Would you advise me to start a new thread in the forum, or ask on this one?

Thank you for the information you provided!
