Sune Bergman

Dani Jonsson Lopez
I apologize for the English, but I do not know Swedish. I hope that's ok. I posted this earlier in Anbytaforum, and then realized It may be better to post my question here.

My great grandparents are from the Kalix area and emigrated in the early 1920's. We have books and artwork from Sune Bergman, apparently an artist born in 1890 in Kalix. (Details are in my blog HERE: http://istalkdeadpeople.blogspot.com/2012/02/sune-bergman-part-tva.html and also HERE: http://istalkdeadpeople.blogspot.com/2012/01/sune-bergman-swedish-handwriting.html    )

I never knew Sune's connection to my family until I learned his wife was Linnea Jonsson. My great grandfather Helge Sigurd Jonsson had a sister named Emma Linnea Jonsson. So it seems Sune was my great grandparents' brother in law, and Uncle to my grandpa.

I have found a few bits of pieces as to who Sune was and what is known about him and his work. I understand he cared a lot about the Lappish people of the area? I was wondering if anyone can tell me any information about him. I have some names and dates, but I am more so wondering about his influence in the Kalix area with his work.

I should clarify, that I am still looking for a birth date of Sune's wife to compare to the birthdate I have for my Linnea Jonsson to solidify this link.  :) Regardless, I am still very much interested in Sune's role around Kalix.

Thanks!

Hi, sorry for my poor English.

The Bergman family has meant a lot for development of the Kalix socken in many ways, in both positive ways and not so positive ways. There are some people in the region who are interested in the history of sawmills and other industries that the Bergman family built. They are organized in this "Kalixforskarna". There are also a Bergman "family club" based in Stockholm, which I am a member of (my wife is one of many decendents of Johan Bergman Olson).

I have met Sune Bergmans son, and I also know Gunnar Bergmans grand son. I have also been the editor of the new edition of the book "Kalix-Waldemarsudde":

http://www.cafepress.co.uk/kalixwudde.337937654

I also work with several other people to develop the web site "Historisk skogsexport från Kalix älvdal", which deals with a lot of things of the Bergman family and the Sawmills of Kalix. There you can find 15 000 pages of digital versions of letters, old documents etc. I also produced some simple exhibitions/video films that you can watch there.

I am sorry to say, but all information is written in Swedish - in the books and on the website. I almost don't know any information at all in English.

But if you send me your email address, I can send you the contact for this grand son I mentioned. I am sure he is good at speaking (and probably writing) English.

Hi Dani!
About "Nog går det bra".

The word in the dedication "Hökarmossen" is a part of Stockholm where Sune was living at that time.

Thank you Magnus! No need to apologize for your English at all, on the contrary, it was very good!

I appreciate the information. My email is DLopez42@wi.rr.com. It's only natural that all the information is in Swedish, which isn't a big deal any more since Google Translate has come into the picture. I do run into problems though when trying to read Swedish handwriting. It takes much more time, depending on the handwriting, to figure it out. I also can't just copy and paste, like I can with computer documents. But that's ok! I'd still like to look at all of it!  I didn't know the Bergman's were involved in several industries.

Any general history of Kalix is welcome too. My family was very attached to their homeland, and since it no doubt had a large influence on who they were when they came to the U.S., I enjoy learning about it, and the culture.

Most cultural traditions are passed down through the Mothers of the family, at least in the US, and despite the fact my great grandparents Helge & Esther had only one child, who was a son, who married a non-swede, and then on top of it, died very young, his daughters and even his German wife tried very hard after my grandfather and his parents passed on to keep hold on the Swedish roots, memories and traditions for us. My own children are a complete mixture of heritages, and I'd very much so like to instill these traditions, and more in them too. So I guess that is one reason why I think it's so important to learn as much as I can, so it is not forgotten. That being said, I welcome all info anyone can throw at me. :)

Thank you for the help!
Dani

Thanks Bengt! I was wondering if that was a name of a place. If so, I had thought it'd be closer to Norrbotten, as I had no idea Sune and Linnea were in Stockholm.

Hi Stig! I believe you spoke with Eva over email? She mentioned your name, and you being a relation of some kind.  I didn't notice your name on the forum until after I posted, then I remembered the email she sent me. So, Nice to "meet" you! :)

Thank you for the information! I have just a few questions, if that's alright?
When it says "Born 1893-10-11 Johannisro,Törböle, N-Kalix fs.(BD)"  What is "Törböle", another name for Töre? and also, what is the "Johannisro"? Is it a small area of Töre?  I am trying to understand how things are regions/cities, etc are named in comparison to what I know. I understand the parish is the smallest municipality places are divided down to, that being Kalix? But I don't quite understand what places like Töre, Nyborg, Storön are in relation to Kalix. Are they like villages in a city? or sections of a parish?

As far as I knew, everything my grandparents told us involved "Nederkalix" and then after finding ship manifests and immigration papers, it also included places like Töre, Nyborg, and Storön.

It looks as though my great grandfather was the only one from his immediate family to emigrate. My great grandmother's Stenman family had more family that came to the US.  I did not know The only Jonsson to come from his own family had been Helge. How sad, to leave all of your family behind. :(

Hej Dani !
Stig.

Hi Dani!
If you enter this URL: http://www.hitta.se/LargeMap.aspx?ShowSatellite=false&SearchType=4 to get out a map and can then be using this move, and then get an idea of the different villages (places) in the Nederkalix assembly. Torbole is a village located 6 km north of Töre Johannisro is the name of the property (house) where, as Gustaf Jonsson (1858-1924) became the owner.
The distance from the Kalix to Töre is 30 km. The distance from the Kalix Nyborg is 12 km, and distance from Kalix to Storön is 19 km. Sends this in both Swedish and English, because GoggleTranslate not always translate Å - Ä - Ö right.
 Regards
 Stig.
